Been thinking...Tory and Fed Libs

Missed posting last week for a few days as I watched Liberals trying their best to implode federally and Tory (John) self-destructing in Ontario.
Fed Liberals should read and heed this advice.
John Tory spent yesterday debating in his own riding. That will likely give rise to the thought that things must be desperate for him indeed. And now he and his brain trust is apparently re-thinking the faith-based funding concept that got him in trouble to start with. Some will say "better late than never". Some will say "never back down". Still more will say "what was that man thinking?" Truth is that he is now caught in the proverbial "damned if I do, damned if I don't" sccenario.
It was dumb to start with and now he will lay bare his absolute lack of judgement by partially reversing himself. To make matters worse some are suggesting that he will advocate for a free vote on his proposal in the legislature. For heaven's sake...what does he think is happening now? We are in the midst of a vote that is truly "free"...a general election. His so-called "leadership edge" is being laid to waste very rapidly. Premier McGuinty must be a happy camper today.

On this theme of taking advice, it is sometimes baffling to see what appears in the media in terms of kicking ones own rear end, a difficult performance. Here is Tom Flanagan, reputed savy poli sci guy who was Harper's campaign manager, writing in the Globe and Mail September 22. He lays out advice on how to run the conservatives election campaign. Really? Well that is what it looks like, but what is going on here. I mean do you take out the scissors, clip the piece and mail it to Dion, saying here is what they are going to do.

If there is a plan for Harper and co surely they will not broadcast it, bits of that would be closely held. So what is this, the former inside man pushed to the outside is feeling lonely; returning to the desolation of Calgary he wants a bit more of that media attention as warm sunshine; he has an urge to let the world know how clever he is; what?

If it was the plan this would not be very loyal, so this is not the plan, how about that? We cannot take much from it can we? So, stepping back a pace and taking the long view I see that these people (he and his devoted huge following, right?) show a few very clear weaknesses.

One is the Wide World of Wrestling view of life. He says"You cannot win by being Boy Scouts. Conservatives have to conduct thorough opposition research and make use of the results, run hard hitting, fact based negative ads, and do whatever is legally possible to jam our opponents communications and disrupt their operations."

No kidding. And if every party did every campaign in that way we would soon be on all fours. Notice there is nothing in his piece about policies or how Canada stands or should in the world or in Canada, just this crap.

So that is the other thing that I noted. Policies do not matter, the whole game is "played" in the alley and the winners come into the rink just for the announcements.

Well I do not know what Dion will do, but it is very clear that if the Cons are like they can be had on method as well as policies.
