In a further muddying of the water that is his government's environment effort, Steve Harper is saying that he wants to join the Asia-Pacific group of 6 to fight climate change. In so doing, he is joining his Good Buddy George Bush and his other Pal John Howard. Two of the great climate change deniers still existent in positions of leadership in the world. Of course, Dubya will be gone in 18 months...and Outback John maybe even sooner. It is just another example of Steve aping his best pal George Bush. A helluva way to run a country.
Howard could be succeeded by Kevin Rudd and the Labour Party (who have done a lot of climate change work)...His party talks sense...just like the Official Opposition in Ottawa. The critic for Climate Change said this year:
"Federal Labor is committed to the ratification of the Kyoto protocol. There are only two developed nations who are not a part of Kyoto and who continue to downplay its capacity and purpose, and one is Australia.
Ratification of Kyoto offers the opportunity to have a place at the table of the single most important international agreement concerning climate change.
Kyoto ratification also offers a range of potential economic benefits through the Clean Development Mechanism and the emissions trading scheme that are directly denied to Australian business.
...
The recent suggestion that the Government is seeking to develop a regional emissions trading scheme out of AP6 and to place it on the APEC agenda will be watched closely. It comes very late in the day for the Howard government, and it is no substitute for the Kyoto Protocol.
The Howard government’s perennial claim to be creating a “new Kyoto” is fictional politics. But what can you expect from a government that first was going to ratify the Protocol, and then spent a decade running it down whilst at the same time using the generous one off targets of Kyoto as the benchmark for its climate change policy.
It’s worth remembering that all the members of the Asia Pacific Partnership on Climate Change have ratified the Kyoto Protocol except for Australia and the United States."

Only an idiot would equate Stephen Harper with George Bush...
Except political pinheads that realises their arguments against Mr. Harper are so weak they have to resort to ad hominen attacks.
Ha ha!!! Well, at least you admit that comparing someone to George Bush is the same as unjustly attacking them, or calling them names.
It's about time that Canadian conservatives recognized that Bush is an absolute disaster. It only took them eight years.
Only an idiot would be unable to see the almost identical policies of George Bush - get your head out of the sand.
Only and idiot (Harper) would follow the Bush policies when he will be gone in a year and Howard is crashing in the polls.
Why would you not equate Harper with say Howard of Australia?
I think the term "Idiot" would apply to the person who . . . signed us on to Kyoto, requested the largest CO2 giveback and then did absolutely nothing for 7 years. Can you all figure out who that was???
Canada's annual CO2 output is 2% of the world's total . . . if we all sat at home in the dark, like shut down the country for 1 year, China would absorb that measly 2% in less than 52 weeks.
So its time to engage both sides of the brain now, will Kyoto work, not a chance, China, India the US and others must be included in any global solution. How many of you are willing to lose your jobs, your car, your standard of living so that China can continue to expand?
I never cease to be amazed that all the lefties, who sat on their hands for 7 years, are now so concerned about CO2!!!
For the annom one . . . Bush's poll numbers are not good . . . somewhere in the 30's. . . . . but the Dimmicrat Congress has an approval rating in the middle 20's . . . so is Pelosi and company actually worse than Bush . . . millions of Americans think so!!!!
Instead of the inane drivell . . . why don't some of you "experts" explain to the rest of us, how, Kyoto will save the world, in spite of the fact that no-one will meet Kyoto targets, and the US, China, Russia and India the largest poluters on the planet are exempt???
Old drool,
So your conny argument for the environment is to do nothing, or even less? Puh leeze, you're going to have to do much better than simply saying canada's contribution to global warming is a mere 2%, which is a bit of an old statistic that fails to account for a great deal of GHG emitting activity within this country. It is your team that scrapped an actionable plan, and successful programs, only to rehash them in weaker forms and cut spending in areas which were actually conducting research.
Face it pal, canadians know that the cons have no plan for the environment, and that our PM has been a complete laughing stock on the world stage. Many EU countries have actually MET their targets, they are leaders, our PM has set us up to be useless followers of Big Oil and the US of A. Canadians don't like bush, they don't like mini-bush, a name harper got all on his own. He'll be rewarded for this soon enough by taking his job back at the NCC when he's booted - nowhere near majority the best he can hope for is another shaky minority, and that is likely not going to happen for the cons I'm afraid because they've run out of friends in parliament. Running a country with 30 percent of the popular vote I would hardly call being a bunch of winners - so continue to troll the boards buddy, I'm sure theres much work for you to do to maintain that 30 percent.
"Many EU countries have actually MET their targets, "
What countries? Please name them - please, please.
They are probably the size of PEI or N.S. Easy to meet targets if the countries are that small. We can fit at least two or three toal land area of the European Union countries into Canada.
Your perspective is wrong because size does matter. We have the second or third largest country in the world and you compaire us to a spot in the map? Many of these countries you can travel across in a day or less - Canada takes about five or six days.
You should also mention those countries that do not meet the targets.
Spam,
First of all, the word is c-o-m-p-a-r-e, Secondly, look to the uK, France, Sweden as examples of effectively mobilizing the population toward a GHG reducing goal.
Since I have actually driven across this country, twice, it takes 7 days from Victoria to St. John's, and that is driving on a mission, so please, don't talk out your ass what you've never done yourself.
Size is irrellevant. Do you think these countries of which you deride don't have other polluting industries, or populations 3 times or more in actual numbers, and in density? Good grief give your head a shake. Part of leading a country is taking charge and mobilizing people toward this goal. Not taking the big oil payoff at the expense of the environment, the rest of the economic structure, and the future of the country.
Take a trip to Ft. Mac, bub and see what is going on, then keep talking out your ass, but please, for the love of god learn how to spell.
alberta report;
"Part of leading a country is taking charge and mobilizing people toward this goal."
Exactly, and under DeYawn [no it is not a spelling mistake, if you ever heard him speak you end up yawning, because he may communicate in a classroom, but not to Canadians.] nothing was done to mobilize us to fight pollution. Where was the inspiration for seven years? There was only one commercial and that was something about the one ton challenge.
At least the Cons are fighting pollution and got the US, China, India and other countries to do the same. In Canada the Cons are at least looking at it as a problem and, as you know are ready to fine polluting industries – but without the Kyoto joke that the LIEberals signed.
Besides, DeYawn even said that the goals can not be met – so if he gets into power what will he do?
Bush is following Canada’s [Harper’s] example in getting other countries to fight pollution, what did DeYawn do? He did too little too late and he expected the Cons to fix his problem.
“Oldschool said... Instead of the inane drivel . . . why don't some of you "experts" explain to the rest of us, how, Kyoto will save the world, in spite of the fact that no-one will meet Kyoto targets, and the US, China, Russia and India the largest polluters on the planet are exempt???

Good question - why are tey exempt?
"Not taking the big oil payoff at the expense of the environment, the rest of the economic structure, and the future of the country."
Is there any proof that the oil industry paying off the Cons [or any government]? I hear this argument all the time, even when the LIEberals were in power - Other than killing all the GHG producing animals [cows, moose, deer etc...]; cutting down all the trees; shutting down all industry will the goals be met under “You never got it done”.
“…the rest of the economic structure …”
Transportation is a problem because of the distances. Our whole economy is based on oil industry. Even Suzuki used a polluting bus to spread his message of fear. [By-the-way ATCO is one of his supporters, I wrote ATCO and asked them to stop.
“for the love of god learn how to spell.”
Speaking of learning to spell it is:
Sam not “Spam”;
irrelevant is not spelled “irrellevant”;
it is UK not “uk”
“So your “conny” argument …” what is a “conny”?
“Puh leeze,” is spelled please
“…simply saying canada's …” it is spelled Canada's – note capital letter!
“a name harper got all on his own.” It is spelled Harper – note capital letter!
“I'm sure theres …” it is spelled there’s
Get a life and practice what you preach and park your car/truck and stop polluting for god’s sake and get your ass out there.
If you hate the oil industry so much - walk, and set the example. Yet, you can not because you are a slave to the oil industry.
If the oil industry shut down you would probably starve to death because your grocery store would be empty of products.
you all sound like complete idiots.Get off your computer and find something useful to do.
Read a book. Learn to listen. Try being empathic.
The level of rhetoric is higher in my daughters grade 4 class.
Too chicken to leave you name?
All Anonymous' are people have no back bone. Probably a Liberal.
You should try to express your self on the issues, rather than hide bhind an anonymous comment.
Don't you think transportation, pollution and other things discussed here are importat?
You can always go and read a story to you daughter and forget about getting angry beause you do not care about what is happening in Canada.
